Projects & case-studies
Since its launch, the CFS Network has invested in research projects to explore principles of circularity in agrifood systems around the world, as well as expanding knowledge on specific theme’s within circular food systems. Here, you can find the results and reports from all past projects funded by the Circular Food Systems Network.
The CFS Network has supported research case studies from across the world, identifying key challenges in agricultural systems that could be tackled by implementing circularity principles. Results showed the variety of challenges that can be found, depending on the region, local climate, prevalent production systems, and technologies. Implementation of circularity principles (for examples, turning waste into agricultural value, recycling nutrients or connecting farming systems) can benefit systems in different ways and these regional case studies demonstrated the potential and variety CFS can play.
To increase our understanding of the benefits of circular food systems, the CFS Network has invested in research projects focusing on the development of metrics to measure and quantify the level of circularity in agrifood systems and how this contributes to greenhouse gas mitigation and other environmental benefits. To capture regional differentiation, the Network financed multiple projects working on this topic. The results can be found here.

Circular Voices (2025-2026)
The project explores how circular food practices in Spain and Bulgaria generate often invisible yet significant benefits—strengthening local economic resilience, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and supporting more sustainable food systems.

Indicators for Circularity (2022-2024)
Throughout 2023, three projects funded by the CFS Network, focus on the development of indicators for circularity at different levels of the food system.

Regional case studies (2021-2022)
To illustrate the regional differences of circular food systems and assess to what extend circularity is already being implemented in current food systems, the Circular Food Systems supported the development of different case studies around the world.
